Vitamin E, as a valuable natural anitoxidant supplement, can help protect the body from a wide variety of aliments resulting from free radicals caused by the normal oxidation process. Refer to an earlier posting about oxidation. But, there is an added bonus when you take Vitamin E supplements; protection from the harmful rays of the sun. During summer months, be sure to get adequate Vitamin E in conjuction with Vitamin C to protect your skin. Exposure to ultra-violet rays can increase oxidation in the body.
We’ve all heard that we should get 5 helpings of fruits and vegetables each day. That helps us get our recommended (minimum) daily allowance of vitamins and minerals. But, study after study has shown that much higher intake of certain nutrients has a much greater preventative result. For example, taking a Vitamin C supplement of between 500-1000mg, and eating a healthy diet are associated with decreased incidence of cancers of the mouth, throat and vocal chords, esophagus, stomach, colon-rectum, and lung. Coronary Heart Dissease and Strokes are also reduced. Seriously consider adding a Vitamin C supplement to your daily regimen.
What causes oxidation in the body? When we eat food, especially meat and fats, the digestion process (metabolism) produces heat which results in highly unstable molecules called “free radicals”. These radicals generate the oxidation which is similar to rusting of metal, or browning of a cut apple when exposed to the air. Your body’s cells are damaged and there is an increased risk of heart disease and even cancers.
Many fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants which combat this oxidation process, but I’ve found it beneficial to add supplements to my diet to ensure that those “free radicals” are wiped out. Specifically, the two vitamins that you’ve heard most about are Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Adding these as supplemental to your healthy diet is very beneficial. Also, adding a natural antioxidant supplement such as Pomegranate Complex is an excellent way to get the proper amount of antioxidants.
